A bluefin off the Ridge, a stubborn week of short fluke, and the club's favorite day of the summer on the Manasquan beachfront.
Monday, July 27 — Paul H picked up a 44" bluefin at Barnegat Ridge on a friend's boat, well after sun-up on a spreader bar. A couple of other boats were hot there too, checking in with bluefin catches. The fluke story was tougher: Luis C hit the river and, in his own words, it stunk.
Friday, July 31 — Scouting day. Frank D headed for the Axel, and Sean W ran out to the Tolten to find no birds, then pushed down to Barnegat Ridge where the boats and birds were stacked up.
Saturday, August 1 — Big Sea Day on the Manasquan beachfront. Great weather, about 20 youth anglers in the annual kids' fishing contest, and yes — fluke were caught. Big thanks to club volunteers John Sheehan, Ron Villano, Joe Mariano, Keith Wohltman, John Poruchynsky, and Bill Beck. Sean W summed it up after 40-plus years of fishing the event: we're blessed to live here — and he still hasn't caught a keeper fluke over that damned rail.
