First river limit of the season and a 62-pound tuna off the Hudson

Things finally started to turn this week — Fred T put together his first river limit of the season, Chris J ran offshore for tuna, and a couple of little guys caught their very first fluke.

7/8/26:

Fred T - First limit of the season in the river. No monsters, but better than it's been, with good short action mixed in. Small jig (about 1/2 oz) with a teaser on top — Gulp grubs, white on top and pink on the bottom. Figures we're still a few weeks behind.

Mike G - 21" striper in the canal, 1/2 oz jig tipped with a killie. Says it's finally starting up.

7/9/26:

Chris J - Ran offshore to the SW corner of the Hudson, 94 miles from the inlet, for a good day of tuna. Heaviest went 62.5 lbs. Left at midnight, back around 5 in the afternoon — very tired but worth it.

7/10/26:

John G - For the surf crew, a fun morning fluking right in front of the Writaway jetty. Kept thinking he was hung up on the rocks and each time came up with two fluke on — high-low rig, jig on the bottom hook with Gulp on top. Close, but no keepers.

Sean W - Nice drift and a great bite on the Sea Girt in the morning, but all shorts except one nice black sea bass. Pushed up to the Rattlesnake and got into gigantic clearnose skates, but no big fluke yet.

Paul S - Took his two grandsons (ages 6 and 3) out in the river for their first-ever fluke. They caught them on their own; their proud papa just helped hold the fish for the pictures. Biggest was 17-1/2", just missing keeper size.
